How the morning goes

  1. The farmyard

    Get there early. There are cold drinks and water for sale while you wait, and the front seats go first.

  2. Past the dams, into the pines

    The first stretch is gentle, between the farm dams and up through a plantation of pines.

  3. The halfway stop

    About halfway

    Out on the open mountain, the tractor stops for fruit and juice and a look back over the Koo Valley.

  4. The zigzags

    2 to 3.3 km · 1 220 to 1 440 m

    Tight bends up the steep face below Dassieshoek, close to the edge in places. Pierre takes it slowly.

  5. The hut

    3.7 km · 1 491 m

    Everyone climbs off at the stone hut for Muscadel and dried fruit. You’re about 400 m higher than the top of Table Mountain.

  6. The other side

    Back down

    The ride down looks over the Robertson valley towards McGregor. Then it’s lunch, if you’ve booked the potjie.

Worth knowing

  • It’s colder and windier at the top. Bring a jersey, even in summer, and a proper jacket in winter.
  • Wear closed shoes and a hat.
  • Cell signal is patchy on the farm. Save your booking email before you set off.
  • If heights bother you, sit on the mountain side of the trailer.
  • Hikers do the Arangieskop trail from the Robertson side over two days. This is the other way up.

Booking and cancelling

The full terms

  • Half to book

    A 50% deposit holds your seats. The rest is due 30 days before your visit.

  • Booking late

    Inside 30 days we ask for the full amount when you book.

  • If you cancel

    21 days or more before: no charge. 7 to 20 days: we keep half. Under 7 days, or a no show: we keep it all.

  • We leave on time

    The tractor won’t wait, and late arrivals count as a no show. Burgers Pass is slow, so leave early.

  • Bad weather

    If we cancel because of rain, snow or the road, you get every cent back.

  • October

    Maintenance month for the road and the tractors. Some dates close, so check with us.

Questions

Which days does the tractor go up?

Wednesdays and Saturdays, in the morning. On busy days there’s an afternoon trip too. It takes about two and a half hours there and back.

What does it cost?

R300 for adults, R250 for teens and students, R170 for kids aged 3 to 12. Under 3 is free. The potjie costs the same again.

Is it fine for small kids and older people?

Yes. You ride in a trailer behind the tractor, so there’s no walking. The road is steep and bumpy in places, so tell us about anyone with a sore back or who struggles to climb onto a trailer.

Is the road scary?

It’s steep, and in places the road runs close to the edge. Pierre has driven it more times than anyone can count and takes it slowly. If heights bother you, sit on the mountain side of the trailer.

Is it really higher than Table Mountain?

Yes. The hut is at 1 491 m. The top of Table Mountain is about 1 085 m, so you’re roughly 400 m higher, and the peak behind the hut goes up to 1 698 m.

What should we bring?

A jersey and a windbreaker, even in summer. It can be warm at the farm and cold and windy at 1 491 m. Sunscreen, a hat and a camera too.

What if the weather is bad?

If rain, snow or wind makes the road unsafe, we cancel and refund you in full. We’ll let you know as early as we can.
